Mah Meri Animal Folklore
Mah Meri Animal Folklore is a collection of seven traditional tales as recounted by Julida Uju, a Mah Meri weaver and dancer from Kampung Sungai Bumbun—one of five Orang Asli villages on Pulau Carey, Selangor.
Rich with imaginative animal characters, these stories offer a window into how the Mah Meri understand and relate to the natural world. In the absence of a written language, oral storytelling serves as a vital repository of the community’s wisdom, culture, and traditions. Passed down through generations, this folklore preserves the Mah Meri’s unique worldview and ancestral heritage.
About Gerimis
Gerimis Art Project is a collaborative artistic and archiving collective that co-produces artworks and cultural content with indigenous Malaysian (Orang Asli) artists and artisans. The collective primarily works with Orang Asli who are already leading their own efforts in promoting and preserving their arts, culture, and traditions. Gerimis advocates for the Orang Asli’s customary territories and the return of these lands to their custodianship.
In 2023, Kalm Village collaborated with Gerimis for the exhibition "Alat & Alam: Weaving the Ancestral Pathways. The Mah Meri of Malaysia."
